About Us: Internship Opportunities

Our Organization

The National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare is a not-for-profit association of 1,300 behavioral healthcare organizations that provide treatment and rehabilitation for mental illnesses and addiction disorders to nearly six million adults, children, and families in communities across the country. Serving as the national voice of the provider community, the National Council advocates within all levels of government to ensure all adults, children, and their families have access to quality behavioral healthcare.

The National Council is located just outside Washington, D.C. in Rockville, MD. Our offices are easily accessible via Washington's Metro system, just two blocks from the Twinbrook Station on the Red Line.

Policy Internship

Interns gain substantive experience in state and federal policy on issues affecting adults and children with mental disabilities and the organizations that provide them community-based mental health and substance abuse treatment. Interns conduct varied research--e.g., legislative, social science, regulatory--and produce fact sheets and policy papers. Recent intern projects included fact sheets and issue briefs involving the Medicare prescription drug benefit and Medicaid reform, including the impact of imposing co-payments and premiums on low-income people with chronic health conditions, and an issue brief on women with mental illness who are victims of domestic violence. Internships may also include attendance at hill briefings and/or advocacy coalition meetings.

The internship is located in the Rockville, MD office.

Qualifications
Interns should have strong analytical, research, and computer skills, including the ability to effectively use the Internet. Graduate students are preferred, but stellar undergraduates with a strong interest in healthcare and/or disability policy will be considered.

Compensation
Interns may work for academic credit and/or a stipend of $12/hour, up to $2,500/semester.
