Washington, DC (January 23, 2008) — The January 21, 2008 issue of People magazine featured a story on “Britney’s Mental Illness,” reporting that family and friends fear Britney Spears may have bipolar disorder. This story, like many others often in the news, raises several questions about mental illness.
 
Mental illness is more common than cancer, diabetes, or even heart disease. Almost 60 million Americans — one of four adults and one of five children — have a mental illness. What are the challenges in diagnosing and treating mental illness? Do Americans have access to effective care and treatment? Can those with serious mental illnesses recover?
