CoE Office Hour: Improving Care & Addressing the Workforce Shortage through Short-term Policy Actions

The National Council, in collaboration with Health Management Associates (HMA), has prepared a series of three issue briefs to offer immediate actions states can take to expand current capacity and build a more stable future mental health and substance use treatment workforce.

The national workforce shortage, intensified by the psychological distress of the global COVID-19 pandemic, continues to impact organizations’ ability to hire and retain staff. This national crisis creates concerns as the demand for mental health and substance use treatment services increases and intensifies pressure on an already overburdened health care workforce.

The recommendations made in these briefs will improve access to treatment services by transforming care delivery to optimize the current workforce, building partnerships across communities to cultivate a pipeline of new workforce members and promoting innovative digital solutions to expand the workforce.
