Mapping the Crisis System of Care: Alternatives to Emergency Departments

Join the National Council for Mental Wellbeing and University of Connecticut’s Innovations Institute on Tuesday, June 27, 2:30-4 p.m. ET for Mapping the Crisis System of Care: Alternatives to Emergency Departments, part of our Crisis Response Services Learning Series, sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

For too long, individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis have been advised to go to hospital emergency departments. This overreliance on the emergency department as the “front door” for people experiencing or at risk for serious mental illness or serious emotional disturbance often results in delays in treatment and exposure to additional trauma, highlighting the need to expand and enhance the mental health and substance use crisis service system.

An effective crisis services continuum, with customizations for adult and child/family populations, provides all individuals in crisis a clear pathway for accessing care and options for how best to meet their needs. Our presenters will map out best practice crisis care pathways to discover alternatives to emergency departments that also address issues of safety, choice and personal freedom.

By attending the webinar, you’ll learn:

  • How to articulate the ideal mental health and substance use crisis services continuum for all people.
  • How to more efficiently and effectively meet the needs of those in crisis, while diverting and reducing the number of individuals seeking emergency department care.
  • How to incorporate best practice crisis continuum customizations to meet the needs of adult populations.
  • How to incorporate best practice crisis continuum customizations to meet the needs of child, youth and family populations.
