April Sweeney, MD, is an adult psychiatrist who has been practicing in the Portland, Oregon, metro area since 2007. She joined Cascadia Health, Oregon’s largest community mental health agency and a Federally Qualified Health Center and Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic, as chief of psychiatry in 2023.
After earning her Doctor of Medicine degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in 2007 and completing her psychiatry residency at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in 2011, she served as a community psychiatrist in various programs at Cascadia Health, including residential, enhanced care, houseless outreach and supportive housing.
Her career has also included roles as an inpatient psychiatrist at the Portland VA Medical Center, a psychotherapist in private practice, a women’s health psychiatrist and a primary care consultant at OHSU’s Center for Women’s Health. From 2018 to 2022, Dr. Sweeney served as a consultant for the Oregon Psychiatric Access Line, providing in-the-moment psychiatric phone consultations to primary care providers statewide.
She is passionate about whole-person health care, encompassing primary care, behavioral health, substance use care and specialty services. She is particularly committed to improving health outcomes for individuals living with mental illness.
